A Documentary on The Troyers
Click the Title
The Amish, often called “the Plain people” for their modest dress and simple lifestyle, are members of a Protestant Christian group that first came to Pennsylvania in the early 1700s seeking religious freedom. Today, they maintain their traditions and live a life of service to God, the family and their community.
They are a distinctive Christian subculture that traces its roots to the 16th century Protestant Reformation.
Ohio's largest Amish settlement is centred around Holmes County and in 2023 included an estimated 39,525 children and adults, the second largest in the world and the highest concentration of Amish in any US county.
The Amish usually have minimal exchanges with the “English”.

The Troyers are an unusually friendly family that belongs to the Holmes old order where some technology is allowed. They run a mattress quilting business on Cherry Ridge and
also farm Turkeys.
This film is an attempt to understand the Amish way of life through the Troyers
Religion is the guiding force in every day and every moment of their lives and it is evident in the concern and compassion in their way of life. Curiosity about others especially from other cultures and a deep contentment combine to make them normal yet unaffected by the modernity that surrounds them.
Confident in their faith, they lead happy fulfilled lives and that is what the film captures – that ease of negotiating their unique identity in a world that is grappling with shifting identities.
